Love Commandments

“I belong to the King of all Creation!  He owns me, but He loves me with all His heart, with all His soul, with all His mind, and with all His strength.  He loves me as He loves Himself, because He commanded me to love Him like that, and His love would never ask me to love above Himself!  Oh, what a crazy thought!  He would never require me to out-love Him!”

This journal entry began a life-changing Bible study for me, that colors my world completely anew.  I had never heard anyone teach on God’s love using the first and second commandments that were given foremost precedence by Jesus.  As a matter of fact, whenever I rehearsed these commandments, it was always with a sense of “Fail!” because I know that I could never love Him like that!  And yet, how could the creation be expected to out-love the Creator? Because He is love, it is impossible to love more than God loves. (I John 4:8 “. . . . for God is love.”)

Even though it makes perfect sense that God loves us with all His heart, all His soul, all His mind and all His strength, the niggling arguer in my mind needed to be silenced. (Actually, the Kathy deep inside who always really wanted to believe such a pure and magnificent Love was not only possible, but inarguably, solidly TRUE, wanted to see it in black and white.) Is the greatest commandment also the greatest expression of God’s love?

First of all, I know that God has a mind and a heart and strength, but does He have a soul?  Hebrews 2:17 tells us that He had to be made like His brethren in all things so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God.  Therefore, our Lord Jesus has a heart, soul, mind and strength, as we do.

Jesus says in Matthew 10:24-25: “A disciple (pupil) is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master.  It is enough for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the slave as his master.”  We cannot love more than our Teacher and Master, Jesus. He is our model of love, the glory of God perfectly revealed, One with God the Father. The essence of God is love, and His commandment that we love Him with everything within us is completely based on the love He initiated in us.  Without Him we can do nothing. (John 15:5) He will always have more capacity to love us than we could love Him; He is God!

John 15:12-13: “This is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus laid down His life for us. That is God’s expression of love for His creation. There is no greater love.

Does God love us as He loves Himself?  (Oh glorious thought!) This is the prayer of Jesus in “behalf of those who believe in Me through [the disciples’] word; … And the glory which Thou has given Me I have given to them; that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, that the world may know that Thou didst send Me, and didst love them, even as Thou didst love Me.” Jesus and God the Father are one, and God loves us as He loves His Son, Jesus.  Therefore, God loves us as He loves Himself! (John 17: 20, 22-23)

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (I John 4:10)   “We love, because He first loved us.”  (1 John 4:19)

Indeed, the Bible is full of story after story of God’s love selflessly poured out upon His Beloved.(That’s US!)  He who commands us not to lie, is He a liar?  He who commands us not to steal, is He a thief?  Every commandment is fulfilled to perfection by God Himself, and it is only through the life of Jesus that we can walk in the redemption and the grace that Jesus provided. The greatest of God’s commandments are not unattainable demands waiting for a failing grade, but powerful affirmations of His astounding love for each one of His children.  No more arguing!

I love you with all My heart, with all My soul, with all My mind, and with all My strength.

I love you as I love Myself.

The greatest commandments have become the greatest expressions of love.
